The living room is the most important space in a home — where guests are received, where the family gathers, and a room with real influence on how everyone feels. Designing the living room to sound feng shui principles keeps the space harmonious, warm and full of “positive energy”. Below are 5 foundational rules that also happen to be sensible layout principles in terms of function and aesthetics.

This article focuses on the living room. For the full picture across the whole apartment, browse more guides in our insights library.

1. Do not let the living room be cut up

In feng shui, a divided living room symbolises division within the family and breaks the shared flow of energy. Functionally, too many solid partitions in a small living room also fragment the space and make it feel stuffy. Favour one continuous space; if you need zoning, use rugs, low shelving or changes in the ceiling or floor plane instead of solid walls.

2. Use only one complete sofa set

Whether the room is large or small, choose one matching sofa set rather than combining two sets or scattering odd chairs. In feng shui terms this signals a family “of one mind”; aesthetically, a unified sofa set keeps the living room tidy and gives the eye a clear anchor.

3. Keep the plan square — avoid sharp corners

A living room with good feng shui should have a square or rectangular plan, with the seating area not facing directly into a corner. If a sharp corner or wall edge “points” at the seats, soften it with a plant, a shelf with rounded edges, or simply rearrange the furniture.

4. Avoid an exposed beam over the sofa

Do not place the sofa (or the main seat) directly beneath an exposed ceiling beam. A beam overhead creates a pressing, oppressive feeling during long sitting. The common fixes are a plasterboard ceiling that conceals the beam, or shifting the sofa clear of the beam line.

5. Shape a sensible entry to hold in good fortune

A gently offset path from the main door into the living room is considered better than a dead-straight one — it avoids draughts rushing straight in and gives the room privacy. Use a screen, a shoe cabinet or an open decorative partition to guide movement without blocking light.

Good feng shui still needs careful execution

The rules above only come together when they are realised through a correct layout, a coordinated ceiling–floor–lighting scheme and precisely made furniture. That is when you need one point of control from design through construction, rather than stitching together separate contractors.

AIC works to a single-point design-build model for apartment interior design and build, with over 10 years in the trade (since 2016 under the predecessor Nhan Viet; AIC was founded in 2019) and two in-house factories (1,200 m² and 600 m²). From a floor plan, AIC can produce a BOQ estimate within roughly 4 working hours so you can size your budget; projects are handed over with a warranty of up to 24 months. Frequently asked questions

How many sofa sets should a living room have according to feng shui?

Only one complete sofa set, even in a large living room. Combining two sets or scattering odd chairs adds seats but is considered a source of discord in feng shui — and it makes the space visually cluttered.

Is it bad to place a sofa under an exposed beam?

It should be avoided. A beam pressing down over the seating creates an oppressive feeling during long sitting. The simple fixes are a plasterboard ceiling that hides the beam, or moving the sofa to a spot with no beam overhead.

Is a main door opening straight into the living room a problem?

A dead-straight path from the main door into the living room is not favoured — it lacks privacy and lets energy rush in too directly. Add a light guiding feature such as a screen, a shoe cabinet or an open decorative partition to soften the entry while keeping the daylight.
